In 2011, Monotype Imaging approached us to build an extension to deliver fonts from their font service, Fonts.com, and Google Web Fonts. The idea was that a web designer could easily integrate fonts from a variety of sources seamlessly into their website design using an interface that accepted CSS selectors. We built it and they were so happy with the result, that they hired us to rewrite the PHP service class that connects to their API. Since then, over 30,000 people have downloaded and used the extension we built.
In September of 2012, Joomla 3 was released. Users immediately began requesting that we update the component to be compatible with Joomla 3. Unfortunately, we couldn't invest the time to do so at a cost to the business. There are developers out there who build extensions on the side for free, but for us it's how we make our living and we have to make sure that we're continually working on profitable projects. Another feature users wanted was support and as a free extension we couldn't provide that either. When we explained this to them, we got feedback back asking us why we didn't simply sell it as a product? That way we could cover our costs and provide support. And, after many people told us this, we decided to do just that. It took us almost a year making the upgrades in our spare time, but we finished and launched it in October.
The official site for the new extension is: webfontspro.com.
So far, we've made a few small improvements on the previous version, integrating an update server and packaging the component and plug-in together. We want to do more though. So, in the coming months we're going to be looking for another font solution to integrate into the extension.
