Why Custom Development Isn't the Only Option

Why Custom Development Isn't the Only Option

Most of the work that Blue Bridge does is for Joomla and this requires that we continually think about how our work will be integrated with the work of other developers. When talking to clients about their needs, occasionally they'll ask me how we’ll execute a project and I sometimes hear them sigh, "You'll probably need to code this from scratch, huh?" This response derives from their experience with past Joomla development companies telling them, "Whoever worked on this last did a horrible job. We’ll have to re-write everything." Now, don't get me wrong, we rarely work with other developers’ code that is to our standards of quality. However, we also rarely tell our clients that we have to start everything over or that what they want can only be coded custom if it's going to work well. Development companies may benefit by custom developing everything, but it's rarely in your best interest to take this approach. In this post, we'll explore when and why you would want opt for custom development and what the options for integrating with other developer’s work are.

Joomla vs. Drupal vs. WordPress

Joomla vs. Drupal vs. WordPress

A question I’m commonly asked is why I prefer Joomla! over the other open source CMS applications, specifically the other big popular applications Drupal and WordPress. People don't understand the differences between the three and jump at the opportunity to ask a domain expert like me what those differences are. Most of the blog posts that I've seen comparing them do Goldilocks comparisons where they fall along a gradient: easy and simple (WordPress), medium and medium (Joomla!), and technical and hard (Drupal). This is easy for people to understand, but it's not accurate and it's a simplification which isn't helpful. In this post, I'm not going to do a rich analysis of the differences between the three, but rather show you why this comparison isn't helpful and suggest an alternate course of analysis.

Rapid Solution Development with Joomla!

Rapid Solution Development with Joomla!

A few years ago, I was working on a job for a client that centered around providing information to their end-users using dynamically presented video and then testing them for comprehension. It was a Joomla! site, and we had some initial conversations about how they wanted to quiz there users. Originally, we discussed a custom solution, however I knew that there had to be some sort of prebuilt extension on the Joomla! extension directory that would most likely satisfy their needs and found one. I encouraged them to try using that extension first and if it didn't work for their purposes then we could look into the development of a custom solution. In this post, we'll explore some benefits and ramifications of utilizing Joomla!'s extensibility.
